Building Character

The character trait for September is Respect.  The Student of the Month will be chosen based on who has best demonstrated being Respectful.  As you can imagine, sometimes it is difficult to choose the student who exemplifies these monthly character traits best.   I make a serious effort to include all students and if they are not chosen for SOM, recognized in another special way throughout the year!  If your child is chosen for Student of the Month, they are usually announced at Flag Ceremony on the first Thursday of the new month.  They are then invited to walk to Coldstone Creamery with the Principal.

Some ideas we discuss in class to encourage being respectful include:

  1. Treating others the way you want to be treated.
  2. Having consideration for others.
  3. Treating people with civility, courtesy, dignity.
  4. Being accepting of people's differences.
  5. Solving problems without violence.
  6. Not ridiculing, embarressing, or hurting others.

The 'Crusader Star' board is for recognizing students who have either excelled on an assignment or has made a great improvment in their classwork.  One paper is chosen per month and is displayed on the office bulletin all month.  These students are announced with the Student of the Month (SOM) on that same Thursday and usually are rewarded with a free meal at a local resturaunt.

Welcome

Hi!  Welcome to our classroom site!  My name is Jennifer Reid and this is my tenth year teaching First Grade at St. Anthony School!  I graduated from Temple University, in 2000 with a B.S. in Education, which included a degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Special Education.

Through college and over the past ten years, I have been blessed to have a wide variety of teaching experiences.  These include experiences teaching Fourth Grade, Third Grade, Eighth Grade, as well as Autistic Support, Emotional Support, and Learning Support Classes in Special Education.  I have coached Soccer, Basketball and T-Ball for the YMCA for several years.  I have also taught Creative Movement classes to toddler aged children through the YMCA.  I have been a counselor in various summer camps for fourteen summers.  I have also acted as Director and Science Teacher for a wonderful summer program called Destination Science for four years.  Lastly, I was an Assistant Director and Tutor for three years with a company called Tutoring Club, which allowed me to tutor preschool through college age students.  Through all of these experiences over the past 17 years, I have really found my 'home' in first grade.
It is a new adventure everyday and I feel blessed to be a teacher.

I strongly believe that it is a partnership between teacher and parent that leads to success in the classroom.  My main goal is for your child to experience success, both emotionally and academically.  Please feel free to email, call, or simply stop by, before or after school, with any questions or concerns you may have.  We are a team and I will do whatever is needed to make your child's year in first grade a successful, meaningful and fun year!

Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire.
